When you think of Florida wildlife, a variety of land and sea creatures come to mind. For some, the alligator quickly comes to mind, for others it could be a flamingo or a dolphin. But the wildlife goes far beyond these iconic species.
We’d like to introduce you to some of the wildlife you’ll find on the shore, swamps, mangroves, and other areas near and far from the beach. In our next blog post, we’ll highlight some of the common fish, mammals and living organisms. We have another upcoming blog post about the flora you can find, too!
On a trip to Naples, FL, you may see some of these animals in the wild or there are sanctuaries, sloughs, parks, and zoos where you can see them at a safe distance. There are many educational tours and museums to learn more about all types of animals.
Among the most well-known animals you can see is the American alligator. It is the largest reptile in North America and an essential part of the Florida ecosystem. Alligators are predators at the top of the food chain so they help keep other populations in check. The trails the forge through marshes and the holes they dig provide habitat for fish and other animals.
The Florida Panther is another animal you can find in Naples. They aren’t spotted often in the wild but you can see them at the zoo. These beautiful animals are one of the most endangered mammals in North America, but thanks to conservation efforts, their numbers are growing. If you’re lucky enough to spot a Florida panther in the wild, keep your distance as they are dangerous.
With more than 500 species of bird, the Sunshine State is a bird watcher’s paradise. From the migratory birds seen flying in from the north during the fall, to the year-round resident species, Florida offers something for every bird-lover. The most popular species include the American Bald Eagle, Osprey, Egrets and Cranes.
Florida’s warm climate and abundant wetlands are a haven for reptiles and amphibians. The alligator is perhaps the most iconic species, but there are also several other fascinating species, like the eastern diamondback rattlesnake, gopher tortoises, and the Florida green anole lizard. You will also frequently find frogs, toads, and salamanders crawling around.
Florida is a wildlife lover’s paradise, but if you aren’t up for a trek into the wilderness, you can also find a variety of native and non-native animals at The Naples Zoo.
